Pop Quiz: Which of these has more calories? A burger or a burger plus a few pieces of celery

Surprisingly, the majority of people cannot figure out that adding more food to a meal does not, in fact, reduce the total calorie count. Believing that healthy foods have a "halo effect" that extends to the rest of the meal, participants in this study guessed that the burger plus celery meal had (on average) 43 calories less than the burger alone.
Also interesting, those most concerned about their weight thought that the burger plus celery combo had an average of 96 calories less, suffering from what the researchers called the "Dieter's paradox". Although it might seem obvious, it's worth pointing out that the benefits gained from healthy foods do not cancel out the negatives of junk food. Junk is still junk, regardless of whether it's accompanied by a side salad.
