The Two Percent Manifesto
By Michael Easter, author of The Comfort Crisis
I used to think improving your health, fitness, and mindset was all about giant changes.
Having the perfect workout.
Selecting the optimal diet.
Deploying a hyper-specific mindset and wellness protocol.
But after all of my research, travels, and conversationsāinterviewing everyone from Nobelists to centenariansāI now know the path is different.
Yes, the workouts, diet plan, and all that stuff matter. Of course.
But what we do in all of our other moments is the most powerful. The littlest choices make the biggest impact.
It all starts with 2%.
The figureāand this Substackās namesakeācomes from a study that changed my thinking about living well in the modern world.
2: Thatās the percentage of people who take the stairs when they also have the option of taking an escalator.
Once you see this, you canāt unsee it. Once you know this, you canāt unknow it.
One hundred percent of those people knew that taking the stairs would be better for them. And they were right.
For example, one study found that just three minutes of taking the stairs a week is associated with a 15 percent reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. That equates to just 25 seconds on the stairs a day. The littlest choices make the biggest impact.
The more I researched, the more I realized the lesson of the two percent statistic apply far beyond the staircase. Humans are seemingly wired to select short-term comfort over long-term gains.
It turns out that only two percent of people will do the harder thing that has a greater long-term benefit if thereās an easier option.
This applies to how we exercise, eat, work, create, think, and spend our time and attention.
