LT Michael P. Murphy (May 7, 1976 – June 28, 2005) became a US Navy Seal in 2002 and was nicknamed "The Protector.
On June 28, 2005, while leading a four-man reconnaissance team during Operation Red Wing, his team was surrounded by Taliban forces in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. Despite being wounded, Murphy moved into the open, knowingly exposing himself to enemy fire, to gain a signal to call for rescue, sacrificing his life to save his team. The story was featured in the book and movie Lone Survivor.
Murphy was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions, the first Navy member to receive the honor since the Vietnam War.
This workout (he called it Body Armor) was one of Murphy’s favorites. First appearing on crossfit.com on 050818, it is now forever known as MURPH in his honor.
